The subfloor has to meet the manufacturer's leveling spec, commonly 3/16 inch over 8 feet, or the locking mechanism works loose over time. Door jambs get undercut so planks slide underneath at each door. We also let the material acclimate in the house 24-48 hours before we start laying.

The plank is 100% waterproof, which suits kitchens, bathrooms, a laundry room, and basements. Unlike laminate flooring or hardwood, vinyl planks won't swell or warp from water exposure. Be clear on what that covers: the material is waterproof, but the installation isn't sealed. Water from a burst pipe travels through the seams to the subfloor, and no warranty covers flooding. Yes. Basements are one of the best uses for LVP, since the plank doesn't absorb water the way wood does. The slab is what decides the approach — we test it for moisture before anything else and put down a vapor barrier over concrete. Even floating floors need a clean, level subfloor underneath. Our crew snaps a chalk line and keeps the first row dead straight off the starting wall, because the first plank sets every row after it. Each new plank goes in at a slight angle and seats against the previous plank with a tapping block and rubber mallet. We stagger end joints 6 to 8 inches between rows, and scrap pieces off the last cut usually start the next row. The last row gets scribed with a straight edge. If your product has attached underlayment, adding more underneath is usually not recommended.
